Located at Number 7, Xiangshan Road, Shanghai City is Sun Yat-sen’s Former Residence. This house was a place of respite for Dr. Sun and his wife, Soong Ching-ling (Song Qingling, Madame Sun), for many years. It thus naturally became a site where many major moments of historic significance occurred, as well as a witness to the close relationship between Dr. Sun and Soong. In 2023, the Shanghai People’s Press published An Annual Chronicle of Sun Yat-sen’s Former Residence in Shanghai, 1918–1949, edited by the staff of Shanghai’s Sun Yat-sen’s Former Residence Memorial. The book is of great reference value for people who wish to understand the Residence itself, and Dr. Sun’s and Soong Ching-ling’s lives there. The Annual Chronicle is a fine reference work, including new materials. The editors thoroughly consulted materials held in the Museum such as the Complete Works of Sun Yat-sen and the Complete Works of Sun Yat-sen, Continued, as well as contemporary scholars’ major unpublished conference proceedings. The Annual Chronicle includes new discoveries, such as details about the property of the Residence and the Second United Front between the CCP and KMT. As a rigorously academic work, the Annual Chronicle provides a new source of textual research for some historical facts. The book faithfully records major historical events such as the Second United Front, the KMT restructuring, and the Xi’an Incident. The Chronicle also gives a detailed introduction to the interpersonal relationships of Madame Sun, including but not limited to her relationships with her husband, her family members, and other comrades.
As a piece of academic research, the Annual Chronicle also breaks some new ground in terms of its scope. In writing about Sun Yat-sen’s Former Residence in Shanghai, it is of course only right that the book highlights the activities of its most famous owners, Sun Yat-sen and Soong Ching-ling. However, in addition to this, many everyday aspects of this unique building – such as the personal property, external/internal security, sanitation, maintenance, purchasing of goods for daily living, payment of utilities (water, electricity, and gas), phone numbers, and everyday expenses – are meticulously detailed. The writing of the Annual Chronicle exhibits some problems, such as poorly-matched styles, inconsistent mentions, inappropriate generalization, repetitive description, etc. These await correction in a later edition. In sum, though, the publishing of the Annual Chronicle is a great achievement in Sun Yat-sen studies, filling in a huge lacuna in one aspect of the scholarship. This work reveals to us that, in the field of Sun Yat-sen studies, there are still vast areas left unexplored, and still much work to be done.
