On October 7, 2022, the College of Liberal Arts, National Sun Yat-sen University; the Office of Library and Information Services, National Sun Yat- sen University; the Global Sinology Forum at NSYSU; and the National Tsing Hua University Museum co-hosted “Promoting the Confucian Dao- Orthodoxy: Exhibition of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Era.” This exhibition coincided with a series of international forums hosted by the Global Sinology Forum at NSYSU on the topic of “Rethinking the Concept and Regenerating the Republic of China Revolution.” Professionals in the fields of history and sociology from seven different countries were invited to attend the forums. This exhibition and related forums sought to raise awareness of the issue of how to get people, especially young people, in Taiwan in 2022 to reconsider Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s revolution and the values of the Republic of China in light of the island’s complex current political and cultural climate.
Rare cultural relics from the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, including calligraphy, photographs, newspapers, and artwork, were displayed to encourage visitors to reflect on the values and cultural concepts that Dr. Sun Yat-sen embodied when he conceived of and fostered the modern transformation of the Republic of China. Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s internationalism, Chineseness, and locality are the three lenses through which this exhibition aimed to encourage visitors to view the revolutionary leader and his legacy. The first exhibition section focused on Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s internationalism. In this exhibition area, the curator affixed a large world map to the wall, depicting Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s legendary international route and its context, so that readers could comprehend his international travels at a glance. nature. The second exhibition section focused on Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Chineseness. This section of the exhibition encouraged visitors to consider the humanistic concept beginning with the three dynasties of sages in Chinese history, specifically how “Confucian Dao-orthodoxy” influenced Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s republicanism in the Republic of China. The third exhibition section focused on Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s locality. How can we, in this time of heightened nationalism, relate Dr. Sun Yat-sen to Taiwan’s past? The author believes that if we give this story enough room to exert its power, it can be seen as a shared history within Taiwan and as a shared cultural asset of Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
