While Dr. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) was studying at the Central School in Hong Kong, he met Rev. Charles Robert Hager from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). He was baptized soon after and received the new name “Rixin” (“daily renewed”), which derives from the quote “If you can one day renovate yourself, do so day to day, and let there be renovation every day” in The Book of Rites – The Great Learning. That is, by refreshing oneself, one can make moral progress every day. His thoughts were unlike those of his common contemporaries. That is, he constantly did his best to attain self-renewal, rather than sticking to the old chapters and stale ideas. He once said that the doctrines of Christianity are about progressing with the times and achieving substantive effectiveness. In other words, the two characters “Rixin” refer to constantly exploring, and the lifelong pursuit of body and mind cultivation. Additionally, in response to political and social changes, the shackles of old Chinese traditions, out of line with the times, were discarded. Further, the “revolutionary truth” that he acquired from church met the people’s needs for modernization at the time. After the founding of the Republic of China, he once said that he intended to use religious morality to make up for political insufficiencies. He believed that the revolution would eventually succeed and make his compatriots proud. Through it all, he advocated revolution and called upon others near and far. He profoundly understood the revolutionary truth of saving the nation with dignity and promoting the concepts of fraternity and self-sacrifice. To this end, Dr. Sun Yat-sen adhered to Jesus’ goals of salvation and the doctrine of progress and innovation. He also adopted religious ceremonies in leading the revolutionary party, and gave himself to the revolution, which has had a profound influence on modern people.
