Dr. Sun Yat-sen was a prolific writer. His political ideals and ideological propositions have been extensively studied by scholars, accumulating a wealth of research findings. As a revolutionary, Sun did not confine the dissemination of his doctrines to written works alone; he also actively promoted them through succinct yet profound inscriptions, leaving behind a significant body of calligraphic masterpieces both domestically and internationally. However, academic research on these inscriptions has long been dominated by historical and political perspectives, often overlooking interactions between their artistic and sociological dimensions. The relationship between traditional calligraphy and modern society in his calligraphy remains an underexplored subject.
As a research fellow at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Japan, the author had the opportunity to participate in the investigation and restoration of Sun Yat-sen’s inscriptions, systematically documenting their preservation in Japan and discovering previously unrecorded works. Building upon the current state of research and drawing from firsthand involvement in related projects, this paper provides an overview of the collection of Sun Yat-sen’s original inscriptions, supplementing existing studies by verifying their presence in Japan. Focusing on the inscriptions housed at Japan’s Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, this paper outlines their historical contexts and briefly introduces their authentication and restoration processes. Furthermore, using Sun Yat-sen’s inscriptions as a case study, this research explores the interaction between calligraphy and domains such as politics, diplomacy, media, and propaganda during Chinese society’s transitional period from old to modern. This paper also analyzes the evolving social role and function of calligraphy in modern times, and examines how it contributed to shaping the revolutionary’s political and cultural identity.
