The study explored the Chinese revolutionary patriots to Taiwan before the founding of the Republic of China. The records of the revolutionary party’s Chen Shao-bai, Zhang Tai-yan, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and the Reformer Liang Qi-chao’s visits to Taiwan are available in the historical data. Although they visited Taiwan in different periods, Chen Shao-bai visited Taiwan twice, the first time in late December 1897 and the second time in August 1898; Zhang Tai-yan visited Taiwan in December 1898 and stayed for six months; Dr. Sun Yat-sen visited Taiwan for the first time in September 1990 and stayed for 44 days; Liang Qi-chao visited Taiwan on March 24, 1911, and stayed for about19 days. Scholars Zhang Tai-yan, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and Liang Qi-chao’s whereabouts while in Taiwan have been discussed, but little is known about Chen Shao-bai’s whereabouts in Taiwan.
Chen Shao-bai is also knowns as Pai. He was from Xinhui County, Guangdong. After the Guangzhou uprising in 1895 suffered failure, he accompanied Dr. Sun Yat-sen to Japan. Dr. Sun Yat-sen left Japan soon after, but Chen Shao-bai stayed in Yokohama to expand the revolutionary base of the Japanese Overseas Chinese Association and launch an exchange network between Dr. Sun Yat-sen and the oppositionpatriots in Japan. After Dr. Sun Yat-sen arrived in Japan in 1897, he headed for Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule to open up a new passageway for the revolutionary cause.
When Chen Shao-bai visited Taiwan for the first time, he exchanged feast poems with the “Yushan Poetry Society” members during banquets in Taipei and organized the Revive China Society (Taiwan Branch) with the overseas Chinese patriots in Taiwan. Later, he visited scenic spots and historical sites in Penghu and Tainan, such as Chikan Tower, Koxinga Shrine, etc. Because of his affiliation with the reporters and editors at “Taiwan News”, his feast poetry and trip to Taiwan were published in “Taiwan News”.
The historical analysis and documentary analysis were adopted in this study. The historical data was adopted, including files from “The Taiwan News”, Taiwan Daily News, and the “Founding Father Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Taiwan” compiled by the Party's History Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang. Chen Shao-bai’s whereabouts while in Taiwan, Penghu, and Tainan and his purpose and plights faced were explored based on the clues about Chen Shao-bai presented in the historical data.
