When the laborers declared March 3, 2015 as a special holiday in mourning for Dr. Sun Yat-sen, shops in Hong Kong were recommended to close. However, businessmen were unwilling to do so. Some shop owners claimed that they were coerced to suspend business by their employees. Meanwhile, some shops opened as usual. What is the cause of the phenomenon? Why did the businessmen choose the former one when facing a choice between gaining profit and mourning for Dr. Sun? Throughout the mourning period, there was a sharp contrast between the worker’s activeness and the merchant's passiveness. What made them react so differently towards the death of Dr. Sun? To answer all these questions, this article aims to examine the reaction of Hong Kong citizens to the death of Dr. Sun. Upon investigation of these events, three stakeholders, including workers, businessmen and the people of Zhongshan in Hong Kong, showed three different views regarding Dr. Sun’s death respectively, as a national hero, KMT's leader and Zhongshan native. Most importantly, these recognitions at different levels reflected the diversity and inclusiveness of the heroic image of Dr. Sun.
