摘要(外文): | There are two problems in researching Umeya Shōkichi. First, the primary sources of Umeya are largely his own records kept in his family collection. Scholars are very difficult to get access to these materials. Umeya's records can hardly be cross-checked as he is seldom mentioned in the writings of Sun Yatsen, Miyazaki Tōten, James Cantlie and others. Second, Umeya Shōkichi is commonly regarded as a symbol of China-Japan friendship, but he has not been scholarly examined and evaluated. This article, based on primary sources and important academic works, attempts to trace the footsteps of Umeya Shōkichi in Hong Kong from 1886 to 1911, highlighting his connections with Sun Yatsen as the main reference. It aims to examine two important issues about Umeya: his relationship with Sun Yatsen and his contribution to the 1911 Revolution.
